Book Reviews: Adolescent Literature

Crush by Carrie Mac

The summer Hope is seventeen, her hippie parents decided to go and build a school in Thailand leaving her with her much older and much less responsible sister in New York. Faced with the prospect of a summer away from the familiarity of the commune where she was raised, Hope must also come to understand and accept that she has found herself attracted to a young female bike mechanic.

A fantastic read which manages to touch on many of the challenges that teenagers face as they make their way toward adulthood. However, it omits the experience of rejection which most teens face, which leaves the reader with a bit of an unrealistic fairytale ending.
